The Oil Paintings |
|
This series of oil paintings falls into the category of "process driven" work. That is, I do not start with any set intention; the imagery emerges from a random color field that gradually gels into a suggestive content. Because of this process, the final results can be quite surrealistic, both in subject matter and the way individual elements are portrayed.
In this series of paintings, which is titled Mythos, the observer is invited to mentally complete the "story". As such, there is no right or wrong interpretation. "As a thing is viewed, so it appears." The work itself can become a tool for self-discovery and/or analysis. Observers can blend each others' stories to create infinite possibilities. |

The Beneath the Surface Series of Pigment Prints |
|
The work in this series is both guided by nature and a response to it. Just as the musician has developed his facility to use the subtle effects of sound to affect the mood and consciousness of the listener, I work with the subtle effects of color and form to evoke a response in the viewer.
Observation has taught me that like responds to like; so to create a thing of beauty is to beckon a beautiful response. I believe that art has the ability to help us transcend the mundane—and that even brief moments of transcendence can forever elevate the human being. Thus I approach my work as both an offering and an invitation.
I approach my images with a sensibility that might be described as traditional. But I am also intrigued by the vast potential of the newly available digital technology. My work in this print series is an exploration of new possibilities—a reinvention of fine art photography by applying a painter's hand to digital tools. In this sense my work is entirely contemporary. |
